Will Diablo 4 Sell Better Than Hogwarts Legacy?

Source: IGGMThe upcoming year is set to see a number of highly anticipated releases, though many have been delayed from their expected release dates in 2021 and 2022. However, each release comes with its own set of caveats that may impact its success. Despite this, there is a particular race in 2023 that I am quite curious about.
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, multiplatform games like Diablo 4 and Hogwarts Legacy are both highly anticipated releases for 2023. It remains to be seen which game will outperform the other in terms of sales, despite both being available on multiple systems without any exclusivity agreements.
Other third-party titles like Jedi Survivor, even if they receive critical acclaim, may not perform as well. These dynamics raise questions about the changing gaming industry and what it takes for a game to succeed in such a competitive market.
Hogwarts Legacy, a brand new IP in the gaming industry, sold a remarkable 12 million copies in its first two weeks, making it a rare achievement in the increasingly competitive gaming market. With the game's upcoming release on additional platforms, including last-gen consoles and the Switch, it has the potential to attract an even larger player base.
As game developers continue to adapt to the evolving trends of the industry, it remains uncertain how Diablo 4 and other 2023 releases will fare in comparison.
Diablo 3 was a massive hit, selling a record-breaking 3.5 million copies in just one day, 6.3 million within its first week, and 30 million by August 2015. As we look forward to the release of Diablo 4, it's unclear whether it will achieve the same enormous success as its predecessor.
While Hogwarts Legacy has had an impressive start with 12 million copies sold in two weeks, Diablo 3 sold the same amount in just six and a half months. Moreover, with the release of other highly anticipated games like Elden Ring, which may sell 20 million copies in its first year, it's uncertain which 2023 releases will emerge as top sellers.
While Hogwarts Legacy has demonstrated strong sales potential, only time will reveal if it can compete with other popular titles in the gaming industry.
It's important to consider additional factors when comparing sales numbers of Diablo 3 and other games to anticipated releases like Hogwarts Legacy.
One crucial factor is the vast expansion of the overall gaming industry in recent years. For example, while Diablo 3 set records when it was released in 2012, it's possible that the same level of success would not be achievable for a game released today.
This may be why we're currently seeing sky-high sales numbers for certain games that may not have reached similar levels a decade ago. By recognizing the changing landscape of the gaming industry, we can better contextualize sales figures and avoid making apples-to-oranges comparisons with older releases.
Diablo 4's two, soon-to-be three, successful betas have generated a lot of excitement for the game's launch. With its predecessor, Diablo 3, boasting 30 million sales over the past decade, it's likely that even more people will be interested in Diablo 4 at launch.
This sets the stage for potentially record-breaking numbers for the upcoming game.

Compared to games like Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo 4 looks to have longer-lasting appeal with continued content updates and the promise of paid expansions.
Unlike Hogwarts Legacy, which many players finished and moved on from, Diablo 4 is designed to exist as a live game indefinitely, with new content continually added through seasons and expansions for more unique reward and Diablo 4 Gold. This model ensures continued interest in the game, resulting in sustained sales for a longer period of time.
While it may be difficult for a non-Call of Duty or non-Grand Theft Auto game to achieve record-breaking success, Diablo 4 has the potential to be one such game.
With its engaging gameplay and ongoing updates, Diablo 4 could surpass expectations and become a major player in the gaming industry. However, only time will tell.
